Class 6A powerhouses post lopsided victories

There weren’t any surprises in Class 6A on the first day of the dual state tournament.

Three of the duals were decided by at least 47 points as Edmond North beat Mustang 59-6, Bixby defeated Sand Springs 59-12 and Stillwater topped Choctaw 75-6.

The closest one was between Broken Arrow and Yukon. Broken Arrow won 41-24.

Edmond North, which will face Broken Arrow in the semifinals, lost just two decisions against Mustang while wrestling five backups. Leading the way and recording falls for the Huskies were Jake Goodin (106 pounds), Joseph Jeter (138), Layton Schneider (144), Brayden Lucas (157), Talon McCollom (175) and Ricky Thomas (285).

"Mustang was the eight seed, so we knew we'd be favored on paper," Edmond North coach Andy Schneider said. "So the big thing was making sure our guys knew to not take it for granted."

Schneider sees Broken Arrow as a much-improved team and isn't taking the Tigers lightly as his team prepares for day two of the tournament.

"They're historically a tough team," Schneider said. "We know the competition level kind of rises the second day of either an individual tournament or a dual tournament. The message to our team is just making sure you understand that."

Stillwater, the other top contender in Class 6A, had the most dominant victory in the Class 6A quarterfinals. The Pioneers scored eight falls, from Aydan Thomas (106), Beric Jordan (113), Sam Smith (120), JJ McComas (126), Cael Hughes (132), LaDarion Lockett (157), AJ Heeg (190) and Cam Johnson (285).

Stillwater also won three matches by forfeit. Among those winners was newcomer Brayden Thompson, who filled in at 215 pounds.

An Oklahoma State signee, Thompson is FloWrestling’s top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 182 pounds. He recently transferred from Lockport, Illinois and could face Bixby star and fellow Oklahoma State signee Jersey Robb in the semifinals at 215.

“He weighed in with (Oklahoma State signee) AJ Heeg at 190 today,” Stillwater coach Ethan Kyle said of Thompson. “That makes him eligible for (190) and 215 according to the rules and you can’t change weight classes on day two, so that’s what we’ll be looking at tomorrow, as well.”

Kyle has been nothing but impressed with Thompson since the wrestler arrived in Stillwater.

“He’s an upper-echelon guy so any time you can plug him in, he’s going to move right to the top of that discussion and be in the mix for winning any weight class that he enters," Kyle said. "But I would say that the last three weeks since he’s gotten in, it’s been a huge boost.”

Tuttle posts shutout against Bristow

Class 4A Tuttle is attempting this week to claim its 20th dual state championship, which would tie Perry for the most in state history.

The Tigers got one step closer to fulfilling that goal Friday as they defeated Bristow 74-0.

Tuttle, which has won a record 13 consecutive dual state crowns, had eight wrestlers pin their opponents — Braden Potts (120), Triston Grounds (126), JJ Head (132), Beau Hickman (138), Tucker Waitman (165), Sam Schmidt (175), Noah McDoulett (190) and Cody Abston (215) — and Jaxon Koeltzow won by forfeit at 144.

The Tigers will face Chickasha in the semifinals after the Fighting Chicks beat Wagoner 60-18.

The other semifinal will feature Cushing and Catoosa.

Cushing beat Fort Gibson 45-31, and Catoosa topped Clinton 59-15.

Class 3A tournament includes pair of close battles

The Class 3A tournament followed Class 6A and included a couple of tight duals.

With the win, Sperry advanced to a matchup against Blackwell, which beat Hinton 63-15.
