Oklahoma Prep Football AP Poll: Verdigris sits atop Class 3A; Claremore, Sequoyah receive votes

Sep. 21—The 2022 season is officially a historical one for Verdigris football.

The Cardinals overtook Lincoln Christian for No. 1 in the AP Class 3A Top 10 after defeating then-Class 2A No. 4 Beggs 40-6 on the road last week. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season in a 42-35 decision at Shiloh Christian in Springdale, Ark.

It is the first AP No. 1 ranking in program history.

Verdigris, now 3-0 and outscoring opponents 131-33, started the season ranked third in Class 3A and has current No. 6 Cascia Hall and perennial power Berryhill — which dropped out of the top this week after a 54-3 loss to 4A No. 1 Cushing — as notable competition in the coming weeks.

Metro Christian (3-0) also jumped Lincoln Christian and is now No. 2 behind the Cardinals, who received five of eight first-place votes.

Elsewhere in Rogers County, Claremore was the third team outside of the Class 5A top 10 to receive votes (1 point) following its 27-10 upset of then-4A No. 6 Hilldale. The Hornets dropped three spots to No. 9 as a result of the loss.

Sequoyah received eight points in the Class 2A poll, missing the top 10 by 10 points. The Eagles have a chance to reach 4-0 for the first time since 2009 when it visits Adair this week.

Points for classes A through 5A are based on 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring. Points for 6A (Division I & II), classes B and C are based on 5-4-3-2-1 scoring.
