Oklahoma Prep Football Poll: Sequoyah joins 2A rankings at No. 9

Sep. 28—Sequoyah is ranked for the first time since 2017.

The latest Oklahoma Prep Football AP Poll has the Eagles ranked No. 9 in Class 2A, a positioning that comes as a result of their explosive offense that has scored no less than 55 points this season while averaging 57.5 points per game. The defense has surrendered 55 points total.

They earned a cumulative 16 points from eight voters to enter the rankings, up from eight points in last week's poll.

Sequoyah now sits at 4-0, its best start since 2009 when the team won its first five games under Matt Hagebusch, who is now the superintendent of Chelsea Public Schools.

However, the toughest stretch of the season is on the horizon for coach Rob Gilbreath's squad.

The Eagles travel to No. 2 Rejoice Christian this week, and another road date awaits them against dangerous Pawhuska on Oct. 21 a week before hosting No. 5 Vinita.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Verdigris retained its No. 1 spot in Class 3A despite nearly blowing a 28-0 lead in a 35-32 win over Tulsa Central last week.

Claremore didn't receive any votes in the Class 5A poll despite making an appearance in the "Others receiving votes" category with one point in last week's rankings.

Claremore Progress sports editor Kevin Green is one of several voters in the weekly Oklahoma Prep Football AP Poll.
