Oklahoma State football home win streak ends & more key stats from loss vs. West Virginia

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s regular season ended in a rainy disappointment.

The Cowboys fell 24-19 to West Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Boone Pickens Stadium, struggling the second half.

OSU (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) now awaits its bowl destination. The Cowboys ended the year with losses in five of their last seven games.

One long streak ends

14: The Cowboys’ record home winning streak ends at 14. OSU’s last loss at home was Oct. 31, 2020, to Texas in overtime.

Cowboys finally find success on ground

180: Total rushing yards by the Cowboys, the most since the Oct. 22 win over Texas. OSU rushed for 142 yards that day. Saturday’s total was impressive considering OSU had just 32 yards on the ground in the opening half.

136: Rushing yards for true freshman Ollie Gordon, a career high. It’s the most rushing yards for any OSU player since Dominic Richardson rushed for 131 in Week 2 against Arizona State. He had 28 yards in the first half.

8.0: Yards per carry on 17 carries for Gordon, who had a long run of 24 yards on a touchdown in the third quarter.

4.7: Yards per carry for Deondre Jackson. The Texas A&M transfer had a career-high 56 yards on 12 carries.

4: Rushing yards for OSU receiver Brennan Presley, who scored on the lone run on a nifty play design that led to a lateral pass in the second quarter.

Up-and-down day for defense

59: Points allowed by the Cowboys in the first quarter throughout their past five games. OSU has failed to score in either opening period. OSU trailed 7-0 after the first against the Mountaineers.

6: Interceptions on the season for Cowboys star safety Jason Taylor II, who grabbed the pick in the second quarter.

10: Different OSU players with a sack this season after Kody Walterscheid’s sack in the first quarter. It was the lone sack for the Cowboys’ defense.

4-15: Third-down conversions for the Mountaineers against OSU’s defense, a success rate of 26.6%, which was well below OSU’s season average of 36.1%.

1-2: Fourth-down success for the Mountaineers, who entered the game converting a whopping 70% of their attempts on the final down.

155: Rushing yards for West Virginia’s Jaylen Anderson, who entered the game with just 120 rushing yards on the season. The redshirt freshman had two long running touchdowns in the third quarter on 54 and 57 yards.

250: Rushing yards for West Virginia, the fourth team to rush for more than 200 yards against OSU this season.

77: Passing yards for the Mountaineers, who completed just 10 of 23 passes with two different quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol.

Rangel makes second start

178: Passing yards for true freshman quarterback Garret Rangel, who completed 18 of 42 passes in his second-career start. Veteran leader Spencer Sanders missed his second complete game with his lingering shoulder injury.

77: Receiving yards for Presley, who finished the regular season with 60 or more receiving yards in seven games.1: Early celebration by WVU’s Malachi Ruffin on a 43-yard reception by Braydon Johnson. Ruffin thought he broke up the play and motioned incomplete as Johnson ran away.
