Scouting No. 16 Baylor

Record: 3-1, 1-0 Big 12

Best player: Defensive tackle Siaki Ika doesn’t show much flashiness with his play, but the big 6-foot-4, 358-pound junior is a monster up front. Last season, he was a huge problem for OSU in the Big 12 Championship, totaling four tackles — 2.5 for loss — and a half sack. Ika particularly went after center Joe Michalski — who was filling in for injured center Danny Godlevske — throughout that game. Ika returned despite heavy draft potential. Now, the Cowboys will counter with Preston Wilson at center and a little better idea of what exactly Ika can do to wreck an offensive gameplan.

The case for Baylor: The Bears are coming off a strong road win at Iowa State and quarterback Blake Shapen had his best game of the season, throwing for 238 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore picked apart OSU’s veteran secondary in the first half of the Big 12 title game last year, completing 17 straight passes at one point. Against a Cowboys secondary that is now considerably less experienced, Shapen and the Bears will likely look to attack through the air with the hope of exposing a weakness. If that works and Baylor’s defense again puts OSU’s Spencer Sanders in tough situations, the Bears will have a lot of success.

The case for OSU: Sanders threw seven total interceptions in two games against Baylor a year ago. But he’s since responded with the best football of his life. He’s in more control than ever. He’s playing super fast. He’s throwing well. He’s running incredibly well. If he keeps up his dynamic start to the season, not many defenses can keep up with the Cowboys. Pair a rolling offense with a defensive front that can wreak havoc, and OSU has a good chance to pull off a huge win to open Big 12 play.
