U.S. Soccer to pay women, men equally

U.S. Soccer and its women’s and men’s national teams announced landmark new contracts Wednesday that will pay the squads equally – including a split of World Cup prize money.

The deals are the culmination of a decades-long fight by the USWNT, U.S. Soccer’s most successful – and visible – team, for equal compensation and fair treatment, and further recognition by the federation that American soccer is stronger when everyone is unified.

Under the new deal, this year’s pool for the USWNT would be $7.2 million, a 54% increase from 2018. That includes a 68% increase – to $120,000 – in what players could earn just from this summer’s World Cup qualifying tournament.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Ohio State football coach Ryan Day is set to receive a contract extension through 2028, the school announced Wednesday. The new deal is worth $9.5 million in annual compensation, raising Day’s yearly income by nearly $2 million.

MLB: Bryce Harper sat out a third straight game as he recovers from a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow and the Phillies slugger may not play right field again until late July. Philadelphia manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday that Harper will remain as the DH whenever he returns to the lineup.
