Scouting Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Record: 2-0

Best player: Running back Kayvon Britten is off to a strong start in two games, averaging 129.5 yards per game and 6.8 yards per carry. The 5-foot-7, 190-pound sophomore has scored four touchdowns. The bulk of his stats came in the season-opening win over Division II Lane (Tennessee) College when he rushed for 237 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. He was rarely used last weekend in a rout, so he’s fresh. But now he’s going to have to contend with the Cowboys’ elite defensive front.

The case for Arkansas-Pine Bluff: There is a very slim chance Arkansas-Pine Bluff even competes with the Cowboys. The Golden Lions struggled with Lane, winning 48-42 before blowing out NAIA North American (Texas) University 76-3 on Saturday. It’s a remarkable step from that competition to a Big 12 opponent, which could bring back memories of OSU’s 84-0 win over Savannah State in 2012.

The case for OSU: The Cowboys have more talent across the roster than the Golden Lions. OSU also knows what type of team is on the other sideline. So, look for a lot of different Cowboys to see action. With a bye week following the game, this is a chance to rest key players ahead of a Big 12 championship rematch at Baylor on Oct. 1.
