Mayfield has urgency to perform well in return for Panthers

Baker Mayfield is running out of time to make a good impression as the Carolina Panthers' quarterback.

The No. 1 overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2018 needs to stack some quality performances together to offset his poor play earlier this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in March.

Mayfield returns to the starting lineup Sunday against an old nemesis, the Baltimore Ravens.

Acquired in a trade with Cleveland, Mayfield began the season as the Panthers' starter, but Carolina stumbled to a 1-4 record as he posted one of the league's worst QB ratings while struggling with batted balls at the line of scrimmage.

He was sidelined with an ankle injury in Week 5 and replaced by undrafted P.J. Walker. But with Walker now out with an ankle injury, Mayfield is the next man up for Carolina (3-7).

"It’s pretty important to win considering we are in the division race right now," Mayfield said when asked about his long-term future. "I’m not worried about anything else. It will take care of itself as long as I do my job. We will see where it goes. That’s how I have handled it.”

The reality is that if Mayfield continues to struggle, he could end up as a backup QB next season, with a greatly reduced salary.

He could certainly reverse that trend by playing well against the AFC North-leading Ravens, who beat the Browns in five of Mayfield's eight starts for Cleveland.

Virginia cancels game vs. Coastal Carolina after shooting

Virginia canceled its home football game against No. 23 Coastal Carolina scheduled for Saturday following a shooting on campus that left three players dead and another wounded. Former player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. is accused of opening fire Sunday night on a bus returning from a field trip, killing Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. A fourth player, Mike Hollins, was critically wounded.

Extra points

MLB: Terry Francona of the Cleveland Guardians and Buck Showalter of the New York Mets were voted Managers of the Year, improving the already sparkling resumes of both veteran baseball leaders. Showalter narrowly won the National League award in a wide-open race, becoming the third person to take the prize four times and the first to do it with four different franchises. He won in the American League with the New York Yankees in 1994, Texas Rangers in 2004 and Baltimore Orioles in 2014. The other four-time winners are Hall of Famers Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa. Baltimore's Brandon Hyde finished second to Francona in the American League, while Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers was runner-up in the NL.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU held on to the top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference rivals Tennessee and LSU are at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. With three of the top six teams and only three weeks left until Selection Sunday, the SEC appears well positioned to put two teams in the CFP for the second straight season and third time overall. USC, the Pac-12′s best and probably last hope to make the final four, is seventh.

NFL: Taylor Heinicke is set to start at quarterback again for the Washington Commanders when they visit the Houston Texans on Sunday. Carson Wentz did not take part in the team’s walkthrough on Wednesday.
