The Oklahoman received five Top 10 awards late last month in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest for print and digital work published in 2022.

Columnist Jenni Carlson earned two Top 10 honors — Short Feature Writing (under 1,500 words) and Sports Columns (a four-part portfolio). The winning feature story was on OU athletic director Joe Castiglione's breakfast club. The column entries were on former OU softball player Jocelyn Alo, late Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach, Carl Albert football assistant coach Cameron Couch and the Idabel football team playing after a tornado.

Photographers Bryan Terry and Sarah Phipps each earned Top 10 honors in Feature Photo.

The Oklahoman also received a Top 10 in Print Portfolio.

The Oklahoman earned Top 10 awards in the APSE contest's second-largest classification — which includes the Buffalo News, Indianapolis Star, Kansas City Star, Las Vegas Review-Journal and St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The awards will be handed out at the APSE's annual summer convention in Las Vegas on July 9-12.

Johnny Bench, Sam Bradford to be inducted into American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame

Johnny Bench and Sam Bradford will be inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame later this spring.

The induction ceremony will be held in the Hall of People at the First Americans Museum at 6:30 p.m. on April 28.

The hall of fame, which inducted its first call in 1972, is being relocated to the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City from Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.

Bench, who grew up in Binger and is Choctaw, is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. As catcher for the Cincinnati Reds from 1967-83, he was twice named the National League MVP and was part of two World Series champions.

Bradford, an Oklahoma City native who is Cherokee, won the 2008 Heisman Trophy. The OU quarterback was then selected No. 1 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, was named NFL Rookie of the Year and played nine seasons in the league.

Oklahoma State baseball sweeps Austin Peay

Oklahoma State baseball hit six home runs as it completed a three-game series sweep of Austin Peay with a 12-4 win Sunday at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater.

The 12th-ranked Cowboys have won five straight games and are 8-3, while Austin Peay fell to 2-9.

Carson Benge and Nolan McLean each had two homers, while Marcus Brown and David Mendham had one. Benge finished 3 of 5 and had four RBIs.

Bayden Root earned the win and improved to 2-1 after tossing the final 5⅔ innings. He struck out six and didn't allow a run.

Oklahoma State softball shuts out South Dakota State

The third-ranked Oklahoma State softball team finished the OSU/Tulsa Invitational Sunday with a 6-0 win over South Dakota State at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater.

OSU (18-1) went 5-0 from Friday through Sunday at the invitational.

Against South Dakota State (12-8), Alabama transfer Lexi Kilfoyl tossed four scoreless innings and improved to 4-0 on the season. Kelly Maxwell earned her first save of the year as she pitched three innings and struck out seven.

Kiley Naomi, Micaela Wark, Katelynn Carwile and Chyenne Factor each had one RBI for the Cowgirls.

OU men's gymnastics team beats Michigan on Senior Night

The top-ranked OU men’s gymnastics team defeated No. 5 Michigan 414.550-410.400 as it held its Senior Night on Saturday at McCasland Field House in Norman.

The Sooners earned four team event victories and three individual event titles.

OU got wins on floor (69.750-67.350), pommel horse (69.600-67.900), vault (71.600-71.300) and parallel bars (68.450-67.850). The Sooners tied Michigan on high bar (65.950).

OU's Vitaliy Guimaraes won floor exercise with 14.100, while Jack Freeman won high bar (14.100). Ignacio Yockers won on pommel horse with a 15.200.
