Oklahoma's Trevor Kastner posts top ride at Corn Palace Stampede Xtreme Bulls

Jul. 15—MITCHELL — It was a deep field of bull riders on Thursday night at the Xtreme Bulls competiton at the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.

But like any good bull riding showdown — 26 climbed on bulls and seven scored qualifying rides — only the strongest were standing with top scores at night's end, led by Trevor Kastner from Roff, Oklahoma, who was deemed Thursday's first-place winner.

During the kickoff of the 51st annual Corn Palace Stampede PRCA Rodeo at the Horsemen's Sports Arena, participants from as close as Letcher and from as far as Makawao, Hawaii, came in hopes to win the Xtreme Bulls competition.

Roff, 34, whose been a PRCA-sanctioned bull rider since the age of 18, won the bull riding event with a score of 87. Roff said it was a long day traveling from Oklahoma, but once he arrived and began his routine, it was smooth sailing.

"I drove up today at 6 this morning, got here, stretched and everything else was second nature," Kastner said. "I did my job, everyone was having fun and it worked out in my favor."

Cash Toews, born and raised in Canton, Kansas, finished in second with a score of 84.5. Toews has already participated in at least 30 rodeos this summer, but was looking forward to performing in Mitchell.

"This is a good rodeo to hit on a summer run," Toews said. "It pays well, has good bulls and luck was on my side here."

In his first attempt, Toews' bull fell down within the first six seconds which allowed him to get a re-ride. Toews said he kept his thoughts under control and cooled off before his second attempt, which allowed him to edge third-place finisher Colton Byram.

Born and raised in Mound City, Kansas, but currently residing in Pittsburg, Byram traveled from Casper, Wyoming to compete in this event. Byram posted a score of 84 and for this to be his first rodeo in Mitchell, he enjoyed it.

"It was real fun competing here, the crowd was electric, we had a good time and it all worked out in the end," Byram said.

Letcher's Mason Moody came in fourth (82.5) and Coy Thorson from Fergus Falls, Minnesota rounded out the top-five with a score of 79.5.
