Oktoberfest, Northern State radio play, Eclipse concert among 5 things to do in Aberdeen

Here are five of the top social events in the Aberdeen area in the week to come. For more events, go to visitaberdeen.com.

Live music by Eclipse: 9 p.m.-midnight Friday, Yelduz Shrine Center, 802 S. Main St., $10.

Aberdeen Oktoberfest: Saturday from 1-11 p.m., Aberdeen Civic Arena, 203 S. Washington St., $7. Aberdeen Oktoberfest celebrates and region’s German/Russian heritage with Bavarian culture, music, dancing, food, beer, wine, activities, dachshund races, German breed dog parade, children’s root beer garden with crafts and inflatables, games and more.

Northern State University radio play: Wednesday, 8 p.m., Krikac Auditorium on the Northern State University campus. Free admission. Hear Northern’s first-ever radio play featuring the "Tell-Tale Heart," by Edgar Allen Poe and "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs.

“Symphonic Colors” with Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony: Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Johnson Fine Arts Center, 12th Avenue Southeast and South State Street, $10. Some of the works will feature soloists from the Aberdeen area, including Northern State faculty members and a side-by-side selection with Aberdeen Central High School orchestra. William Wieland, composer at Northern, will write a new work for this program as well. Some of the favorite pieces on the program include Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze,” Prokofiev’s “Love for Three Oranges,” Corigliano’s “Red Violin” and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Live artists from the Northern Art Department will also be on stage to paint works inspired by the music.

Local author reading with Patrick Gallagher: Saturday, 2 p.m., Red Rooster Coffee House, 218 S. Main St. Hear Patrick Gallagher read from his book “Uncle Sam is coming to town (with Santa Claus).” Books will be available for purchase.
