Your Old 'American Idol' Favorites Are Coming Back to Compete in an Unexpected Twist

Well, this is certainly an unprecedented move by American Idol. On Monday, April 19, a handful of last season's top contestants will be taking the stage once again for a chance to earn a spot in this year's top 10. After all of the performances and votes are tallied, the winner of the comeback round will be announced on Sunday, May 2 and join this season's remaining Idol hopefuls.

Why is American Idol doing this, you ask? Based on what executive producer and showrunner Trish Kinane told Billboard, it's a way for last year's contestants to get the full Idol experience since last spring's live shows had to be remotely produced in the contestants' own homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While viewers will recognize most of the artists, it's important to note that fan favorites Dillon James and Francisco Martin will not be returning due to their contracts with their record labels. Even still, there's quite a talented roster to get excited about:
