Old Bridge man charged with drunken crash that killed Sayreville woman

OLD BRIDGE – A 20-year-old township man has been charged in a Sunday night crash that left a Sayreville woman dead and the driver of the car she was traveling in seriously injured.

James Cannici was charged with aggravated manslaughter, a first-degree crime, as well as vehicular homicide, aggravated assault and assault by auto, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said.

Cannici was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a detention hearing.

The woman who was killed in the crash was identified as Florence Akoma, 45, who was a passenger in a Honda Accord involved in the crash.

Police responded around 11:17 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 18 and Ferris Road where arriving officers found three vehicles in a serous crash. Akoma was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Honda she was traveling in suffered significant injuries, the prosecutor's office said.

An investigation indicated a Nissan Rogue driven by Cannici turned left from Ferris Road onto the wrong side of Route 18 and struck a Honda Accord and another vehicle, the prosecutor’s office said.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the crash is asked to call Old Bridge Detective Haviland at 732-721-5600 ext. 3210 or Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Alleva at 732-745-4011.
