Old Capitol Chorus brings four-part harmony to Iowa City area. Here's when you can check it out.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Old Capitol Chorus.

Our little corner of the singing world, in and around Iowa City, brings four-part harmony to the community throughout the year. Under the direction of Chad Knipfer, and now in our 59th year, we hold an annual show, Cookie Festival workshop for barbershop harmony, deliver singing valentines, present a free concert in our rehearsal hall, close the Englert’s Festival of Carols, sing for birthdays, and open for other groups.

Our annual show, "Harmony Days Are Here Again!" is Nov. 4 at Coralville’s Center for Performing Arts. Included in our chorus set are two songs we took to contest recently: "Cheer Up Charlie" and "Let’s Get Away From It All."

The show will feature Tapestry, a rising star quartet. It competed in its first international preliminary barbershop quartet competition in March. Tapestry finished 34th in the world. Also on hand will be Corridor 4 Quartet.

To top it off, we will again award the Big Wheel In The Arts Award, to recognize sustained contributions to the performing arts in Iowa City. This will be our first Big Wheel in three years and we’re eager to shine light on dedication and talent provided to our community.

We are thrilled to award it to Ed Kottick this year. Don’t miss it. Tickets are online with Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.

There is a great deal of singing going on in Iowa City and Coralville. Often within little pockets of occurrence that can be overlooked. Wouldn’t it be a fun event to have several choral groups of various size and styles performing in one place? Iowa City could accomplish that as an annual event.

But for now, on Thursday, Oct. 27, six groups will sing in one evening that begins to demonstrate the variety of singing in our area. Dubbed "Harmony in the Hall,"this free 90-minute event will bring together: Iowa City Youth Choir, The Quire of Eastern Iowa, UI Intersection a cappella, Iowa Hawkapellas, Corridor 4 Quartet, and OCC. All beginning at 7 p.m. in the Social Hall of Robert Lee Community Center.

October 27 and November 4. It’s coming up!

David Keeley sings with Old Capitol Chorus and enjoys every minute with his fellow chorusters.
