Old Dominion, Western Kentucky meet in Charlotte for Famous Toastery Bowl

Bowl season arrives in the Queen City on Monday afternoon.

Western Kentucky and Old Dominion square off at 2:30 p.m. Monday at UNC Charlotte’s Jerry Richardson Stadium in the first Famous Toastery Bowl.

“Everyone’s excited to get the opportunity to play a really good Old Dominion team in a good bowl game in Charlotte,” Western Kentucky head coach Tyson Helton said Monday at a local media day. “Charlotte’s a great town, so I know our guys and our families will have a great time.”

The Monarchs (6-6) secured an improbable 25-24 win against Georgia State to become bowl-eligible in their regular-season finale, scoring 18 points during the final 1:37 of a game they trailed 21-0 at halftime.

They’ll try to keep it rolling against the Hilltoppers (7-5), playing in their fifth straight bowl game under Helton and their 10th in the past 12 years. Senior quarterback Austin Reed has thrown for 3,340 yards, which ranks 16th nationally.

Initially the Bahamas Bowl, this year’s game was relocated to Charlotte due to stadium renovations. Though it is expected to return to Nassau in 2024, ESPN Events named the Charlotte-based breakfast chain as its title sponsor when the bowl was moved north.
