Old-fashion service and style offered at new location of Locals Barbershop

COSHOCTON − Locals Barbershop has opened a second location at 115 S. Sixth St.It operates like the old-fashion barbershops, where walk-in are welcomed as is those who just want to hang out.

Jay West opened Locals Barbershop in 2019 at 1239 Chestnut St. He and partner Brandon Selders recently added the second shop in the former location of Rust Décor, which moved to a bigger location on Main Street last year. Renovations took about a year, Selders said.

West is staying at the Chestnut Street location with Selders managing the Sixth Street spot. Cutting hair there along with Selders is his brother Kobe Rust and West's girlfriend Erin Romine. The shop has six barber chairs and that's by design, West said.

"We would like to be the landing spot for up and coming barbers and aspiring barbers. If they want to stick around and cut in town, hopefully we'll be their first stop," West said.

The shop provides haircuts, shaves and beard trims with their trademark being a straight razor shave along the neck at the end of a clip. West said he has several female clients with most getting short haircuts.

"All the old-traditional barber stuff, that's what we look for," West said of their services.

Selders will take appointments along with walk-ins while the other two will be taking walk-ins only. West and his other stylists mostly take appointments, with a few walk-ins, at the original shop. Many people are looking for the convivence by dropping in after work or when they have some free time, he added.

"A lot of people can't make appointments. They get off work and want to come straight here. Sometimes we're booked, especially from 4 to 6 p.m., that's the best time for people to get in and our books our already filled," Selders said. "We wanted bring a walk-in shop to town as well. You can have an appointment up there (on Chestnut Street) or walk-in down here (on Sixth Street). Either way, we'll take care of you."

The back area features a long couch, tables and chairs, a large television, pool table and an old telephone booth as a novelty. Selders said they want to add other items, like an old-fashioned gumball machine, in the future and there is opportunity to expand into the second half of the building.

"For a walk-in shop, we wanted more space because it can get busy with a lot of people. As they're waiting for a haircut, we wanted them to have something to do," Selders said.

West said community feedback for the second location has been strong. They're also happy to be part of a rising downtown area with refurbished buildings and new businesses opening being the norm for the past few years.

"We wanted to be downtown, just to be part of this revitalization and bring something to this end of Main Street," West said. "They've got a good plan shaping up downtown and it looks like we're in the middle of it."

Locals Barbershop Downtown is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. More information can be found on the shop's Facebook page and appointments can be made at barberbrandon740.booksy.com.
