Old Kansas City school transformed into art center shows stories of the Bible

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 120-year-old Kansas City school is being transformed into an art center, and now the first art exhibit is open for you to enjoy.

Overland Park artist Bryce Holt spent a year working on “The Bible in Art.” He read the entire Bible and then created a painting to represent each book, putting imagery from the text on canvas.

The exhibit is in the former Crispus Attucks School, which was built in 1905. They are still finishing up construction outside, but inside the gallery is complete.

And Holt is honored to be the first local artist to show his work in this space.

“I need something inside my life that says this is bigger than you are. And that’s what this project is. It’s 66 paintings, it’s a lot of work, and it’s what I truly love doing every day,” Holt said.

This is the first-ever art exhibit inside the new Zhou B Art Center at 19th and Woodland east of downtown.

“This is an ancient book, but it still says things to us in modern ways so what I was trying to do is just tap into what is important about that story, what is important to us as a modern people, and interpreting, that story, and seeing if I could convey that in a drawing,” Holt said.

The Old Testament paintings are on display through the end of February, and then Holt will display his New Testament paintings through April 6.

You can only see this exhibit by appointment, so go to thepatrons.com to learn more.
