Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. There is a new twist on an old scam that can empty your pockets. Portsmouth Police are warning about a new scam involving cryptocurrency and ATM machines. Thieves convince people into buying gift cards that are sent or emailed to scammers, making the funds "nearly impossible" to recover. In a new twist, thieves pretend to be bank employees, from a utility company, or law enforcement and convince victims to pay them using a QR code at an ATM that takes cryptocurrency. The QR code immediately sends the payment to the scammers and can't be recovered, according to the FBI. Traditional online banking or wire transfers take one or two days, officials said, improving the chances of recovery. Portsmouth police wrote, if someone you don't know is asking you to send them money don't do it, whether it's cryptocurrency or otherwise. You can read more about this story here: (Seacoast Current)

  2. Home sales have dropped nationally from November to December with fewer homes for sale. In Bedford, more homes are coming on the market in January, but competition among buyers will be greater, according to real estate experts.Home sales were down by 3.6 percent from November to December, according to Redfin, a national real estate brokerage company. Home sales may be dropping, but "not for lack of demand," said Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather in a press release. There are many home buyers, but not as many homes for sale, he added. The average sale price for residential properties nationally was $382,900, which is 15.2 percent higher than December 2020, according to Redfin. Nearly 43 percent of homes sold above list price. 3. A local actor from Maine, Matt Delameter, was cast in George Clooney's new movie, The Tender Bar. The movie also starred Ben Affleck. In an interview with Maine music station 92 Moose FM, Delameter said that due to COVID-19, he recorded his audition tape for the film in his son's room "that had the best lighting" in his home. The Tender Bar is a movie based on the best-selling memoir about a boy growing up on Long Island who is looking for a father figure among the regular patrons at his uncle's bar. The story is set on Long Island, but most of the filming takes place in Massachusetts. New Hampshire also has its share of Hollywood celebrities, including Sarah Silverman, who was born in Bedford, and Seth Meyers who moved to Bedford when he was growing up.
