‘Old school’ maker of sports apparel in KC gets its own store in Johnson County

A Kansas City-based sports apparel store — offering caps, pennants, T-shirts and baseballs — is opening its first storefront Tuesday.

Sandlot Goods wholesales to several area stores and offers a selection inside Made in Kansas City’s Marketplaces. The retailer will move into former children’s clothing store Gobug in Leawood’s Park Place at 11530 Ash St.

The business was founded in 2014 as a leather goods company, specializing in wallets and journals. While Sandlot hasn’t abandoned leatherwork completely, it shifted to mostly sportswear after the pandemic.

Its caps are hand cut and sewn in Kansas City by a smaller staff of higher paid workers — the “old school” way of manufacturing, said the company’s vice president of strategic development, Garret Prather.

“We definitely hang our hats, I guess you could say, on the fact that we make ball caps here,” he said.

Made in KC has an investment in Sandlot, Prather said.

Its website displays red and gold corduroy hats, as well as royal blue tees with “Kansas City” across the front in sprawling script. The business sells a variety of licensed and non-licensed designs from the Chiefs, Royals and other favorite teams.

Sandlot also designed a Yardball, which feels like a soft leather baseball glove, and users can play with it inside with their bare hands.

While the business’s soft opening is next week, Prather said a grand opening is planned for September.

The store will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

Its products can be ordered online at sandlotgoods.com.
