Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show awards scholarships

Jun. 7—Ninety-four entries are close to the most that have participated in the Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show over the years, but for whatever reason, these beauties seemed incredibly dazzling on Saturday.

Partly sunny, low 70s and a slight breeze may have had something to do with it, but motorized vehicles and campers stretched nonstop from the courthouse lawn, through the TrailWest Bank parking lot and their grass field to the end of the old schoolhouse lawn near the Clark Fork River.

New this year were activities for younger children who were not interested in the main attraction. Under the TrailWest Bank drive through awing were volunteers hosting and directing face painting, a coloring contest and a small tire-toss.

All volunteers for the day wore yellow T-shirts for easy identification and many said they were there to help for the day while others are on the committee that plans this popular event all year long. At least six different raffle-buckets for prize groupings were offered plus vender booths, food trucks and individual organizations recruiting and selling their own tickets for their own prizes.

Every year, the OSRCS gifts $500 scholarships to seniors who recently graduated from the three high schools in Mineral County.

From Alberton this year were Kaleigh Crider and Molia Dao. Superior recipients were Madeline Drey, Payton Milender, Molly Patko, Isabella Pereira and Kylie Quick. Macy Hill from St. Regis capped off the deserving applications from the Class of 2023.

"Normally, we give six scholarships out, but we had some extra money and added 2 more this year," said Mike Curtin, outgoing president of the event as Dan Clements takes the steering wheel for 2024, and beyond. "And actually, Dan just bumped each scholarship to $550 so he's off to a great start," he grinned.

On Saturday June 3, the bright green lawns of the Mineral County Courthouse, TrailWest Bank, and all the way down to the old Schoolhouse were packed with colorful classic cars, vintage camper and truck setups, hots rods, custom rides, and just about any automobile to suit your fancy.
