Old York DAR chapter names Good Citizen award winners

YORK — The Old York Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Good Citizen Award.

The award is given to high school students who demonstrate the qualities of a DAR Good Citizen including dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This year’s winners were Chloe Carbonneau of Wells High School, Sage Collis of York High School and Elaina Eves of Noble High School.

Collis is also the Maine State Organization DAR winner of the Good Citizen Scholarship Essay Contest.

Chloe Carbonneau

Carbonneau, a senior at Wells High School, is a member of the National Honor Society. She has completed honors courses such as history/government and French IV and earned college credits for statistics and microbiology lab through the York County Community College. This school year, Carbonneau is taking advanced placement courses including biology, biology lab, calculus, English literature and composition as well as forensics.

She is an avid reader and a sports enthusiast. She participates in softball, weightlifting, and basketball for which she serves as varsity team manager. She is a developmental coach for young children and a “demonstrator” for softball clinics. In terms of community service, Carbonneau’s volunteer hours have far exceeded the school minimum requirement. During the holiday season, she prepares holiday food baskets for families and purchases gifts for children in need. She is involved with the Interact Club and participates in the Veterans 5K and other benefit races.

Carbonneau has worked in a variety of local restaurants and in an ice cream shop. She plans to major in biology with a specialty in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) research and a minor in agriculture. Following post-graduate studies, she aspires to work in a lab to manufacture food grown from animal stem cells.

Elaina Eves

Eves is dually enrolled at Noble High School and the Sanford Regional Technical Center. She serves as senior class president and is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honors Society which recognizes students for their scholastic achievement and leadership in career and technical education programs. During her junior and senior years, Eves enrolled in several advanced placement courses such as calculus, history, and statistics and completed Spanish III. Given the high level of math and sciences coursework, she is on track to graduate with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) endorsement.

In conjunction with her church youth group, Eves participates in local community service projects such as cooking meals for families navigating food scarcity. Also, she took a “life-changing” service-learning trip to a rural mining town in West Virginia where she helped build houses for families in need. As a member of the Brixham Danceworks Repertory Company, Eves attends the dance academy several days a week and has placed third and sixth in recent competitions.

Past jobs include working as a grocery store assistant manager and as a hostess/server in a local café. Eves plans to attend college with a major in business administration and a minor in history. A future goal is to own and manage a business.

Sage Collis

Collis,a York HighSchoolsenior, is dually enrolled in a college preparatory program at York High School and as a diploma candidate in the AP Capstone Program that provides opportunities to engage in authentic research and interdisciplinary academic writing. She has completed many honors/AP courses such as Spanish IV, psychology, chemistry, functions/statistics/trigonometry and U.S. history. Collis is a member of the National World Language Honor Society. She has served as a YHS class officer all four years and currently is president.

She enjoys sports including skiing, field hockey and spring track and field (javelin, shotput and discus). As president of the Young Women’s Leadership Group, Collis engages with peers to research and address gender issues within the school. Collis was selected as a student representative on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) grant writing team involving the allocation of resources for district-level initiatives and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) to assist in the York school system’s accreditation process. She participates in the activities of Eco Club, Newspaper Club and Sober Friendly and volunteers with Planned Parenthood and in a local soup kitchen.

Collis’ work experience includes being a retail clerk in a bread store/bakery and a server in two local restaurants. In the future, Collisplans to obtain a college degree in political science and work with a nonprofit organization serving communities.
