Oldest gorilla in the world celebrates 66th birthday

STORY: The edible birthday gifts were a rare treat for Fatou, a resident of Berlin Zoo whose diet usually consists of vegetables due to the high amount of sugar in fruits.

Because of Fatou’s record age, surpassing the average Gorilla lifespan of up to 40 years by more than two decades, she requires even more care.

“At her advanced age, Fatou needs very soft food that she can chew well even without teeth," said zoo keeper Ruben Gralki in a press release by Berlin Zoo.

Fatou was able to enjoy her birthday treats without worrying about sharing with others, because although Berlin Zoo has five other gorillas, Fatou has her own pen due to her advanced age.
