For the past four years, the residents at Oak Point Community in Middleboro have been fighting to have safety, health and structural issues fixed in their manufactured homes. Residents have described standing water flooding their yards and crawlspaces, mold, corroded gas lines, missing vapor barriers and damaged plumbing under their homes, improperly installed heating systems and missing or improperly installed parts meant to fasten the roofs to the homes, and the homes to concrete blocks and/or the foundations. Four years later, lawsuits are still pending, and issues remain.
The local real estate market continues its boom, with this past week's top-selling home going for almost $1 million. The executive-style Colonial in Raynham has a resort-style backyard with an in-ground pool and cabana. A Taunton Fire Department captain is transforming a single-family house on Winthrop Street into a group home for people who are homeless — right up the street from another group home he owns.
The City Council unanimously approved a special permit on Aug. 30. for Captain Robert Bastis Jr. for a group home run by Community Counseling of Bristol County at a property he owns at 38 Winthrop St.

Leonard School neighbors push back hard against condo plan
Jennifer Hoye said more than half the residents in her neighborhood oppose the city's proposal to allow a condominium complex on the closed Leonard School property.
"I've gone door to door, and everyone is surprised, and more than a few have shed tears," said Hoye, an Eldridge Street resident who launched a citizen's petition to oppose the Office of Economic and Community Development's proposal.
As of this writing, more than 500 people had signed the petition on change.org.
