Ole Miss football, Lane Kiffin hire Jake Schoonover as special teams coordinator

OXFORD — Ole Miss football announced the hiring of Jake Schoonover as its new special teams coordinator on Wednesday.

Schoonover replaces Marty Biagi, who is reportedly expected to take over as Notre Dame's special teams coordinator.

"We are excited to add Coach Schoonover's special teams expertise to our staff," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said in a prepared statement. "He has a great track record of success in both recruiting and special teams, and we look forward to elevating that facet of our program."

Schoonover arrives in Oxford from Arkansas State, where he coached special teams and safeties for Butch Jones. He spent the 2021 season as Kansas' special teams coordinator. Before that, he coached special teams and linebackers for three seasons at Bowling Green and seven seasons at Illinois State.

According to Football Outsiders' special teams Fremeau Efficiency Index, Arkansas State's unit ranked second among FBS teams last season under Schoonover. Ole Miss' special teams ranked 99th.

Schoonover is the fifth new assistant for Kiffin, whose staff has consistently turned over since his arrival in Oxford for the 2020 season.
