Recap: Ole Miss football rides big second half to victory over Vanderbilt

Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss football have a chance to score a bowl berth barely a week into October.

The No. 9 Rebels (5-0, 1-0 SEC) visit Vanderbilt (3-2, 0-1) in Nashville on Saturday (3 p.m., SEC Network) with a chance to start 6-0 for the first time since 2014. With a win, Ole Miss will become bowl eligible for the third time in Kiffin's three seasons and keep pace as one of the few remaining unbeatens in the SEC.

Ole Miss has won three straight against Vanderbilt and has not lost in Nashville since an overtime loss in 2018. The Rebels enter this game ranked No. 7 nationally in scoring defense and No. 5 in rushing offense. The Rebels also rank in the top three in the SEC in first downs per game, sacks and sacks allowed, tackles for loss and takeaways.

Ole Miss football vs. Vanderbilt: Live score updates from SEC Week 6

Fourth quarter

FINAL: Ole Miss 52, Vanderbilt 28. Ole Miss scores on a hurry-up play in the final seconds, a short Matt Jones TD run.

6:49 left: Jonathan Mingo's 72-yard touchdown catch is his second long TD of the game. Another one play drive. Mingo has 238 receiving yards.

Ole Miss 45, Vanderbilt 20.

7:02 left: A lengthy Vanderbilt drive ends with a turnover on downs on a checkdown throw. Interesting.

Third quarter

35 seconds left: Jaxson Dart's pass is intercepted by De'Rickey Wright, who has his second INT of the game. Both were awful decisions.

Ole Miss was deep in Vandy territory.

4:07 left: Trip White tackles the Vanderbilt punter. That's a flag. Vandy's drive continues.

Jonathan Mingo's 71-yard touchdown catch pushes Ole Miss ahead by three scores

6:30 left: One play, one touchdown. Jonathan Mingo's 71-yard catch and run pushes Ole Miss' lead to 38-20.

What a difference a half-quarter makes. Mingo has 166 receiving yards on seven catches. Ole Miss' offense has scored two touchdowns in the last two plays.

7:20 left: After a Vandy holding penalty, Ole Miss forces a punt. Rebels defense playing well in the second half.

Ole Miss can put the game away on this offensive drive.

Ole Miss turns turnover into a big TD

8:29 left: Quinshon Judkins TD run. Ole Miss now clear in front.

Ole Miss 31, Vanderbilt 20.

8:33 left: Vanderbilt's A.J. Swann throws a backward pass that is recovered by Ole Miss deep in Vandy territory.

It is being reviewed.

Ruling on the field stands. Ball recovered by Ladarius Tennison at the Vandy 6.

Ole Miss back in front

9:57 left: That's the Ole Miss offense you're used to seeing. Zach Evans runs over the left side and won't be hauled down until he scores. Good drive by the Rebels. 24-yard TD run by Evans.

OIe Miss 24, Vanderbilt 20.

11:38 left: Vandy gets one first down but nothing else. Commodores will punt.

Second quarter

HALFTIME: Vandy 20, Ole Miss 17.

Couple of big plays by Ole Miss through the air have kept this game from getting out of hand. Vandy will receive the ball out of the halftime locker room.

Ole Miss cuts Vanderbilt's lead to 3 before halftime

21 seconds left: Touchdown Ole Miss! Quinshon Judkins plunges in from a yard out on a play that started with Dart under center.

Vanderbilt 20, Ole Miss 17.

38 seconds left: Jaxson Dart to Jonathan Mingo on a 48-yard deep shot, and Ole Miss has a chance to get points before halftime.

1:36 left: Ray Davis with a 5-yard TD run on 4th and short. That drive took at least 8 minutes.

Vanderbilt 20, Ole Miss 10.

2:16 left: Will Sheppard drops a touchdown pass. Vandy still pushing for a score though as the clock gets closer to halftime.

7:23 left: A roughing the passer penalty on a running back throwback play pushes Vanderbilt into Ole Miss territory.

Ole Miss' defense going to need a wake-up call.

Jordan Watkins gets Ole Miss back on track with a 61-yard touchdown catch

10:27 left: Jordan Watkins was wiiiiiiiiiiide open over the middle. He's untouched for a 61-yard touchdown.

Vandy busted a coverage, but good on Dart to find Watkins on the crossing route. Don't think it was his first read.

Vanderbilt 13, Ole Miss 10.

11:22 left: Joseph Bulovas is good from 34 yards out. Ole Miss defense stands tall again after Vandy enters the red zone. Commodores averaging 6.9 yards per play, though.

Vandy 13, Ole Miss 3.

13:15 left: I don't know what Jaxson Dart was thinking there. He could have scrambled for a first down for a long while, but instead he threw a poor pass into coverage. Intercepted by De'Rickey Wright. Vandy ball in Ole Miss territory, just past midfield.

Vanderbilt takes the lead on a WR quick screen pass TD

13:35 left: Jayden McGowan takes a quick WR screen pass 36 yards for a touchdown. Shades of what Ole Miss struggled with against Kentucky.

McGowan could be down near the Ole Miss 1, but it'll be first and goal if overturned.

After review, play stands. TD Vanderbilt. Commodores 10, Ole Miss 3.

Davison Igbinosun won't be looking forward to the film study of that play. He was easily dispatched by McGowan.

First quarter

End of the first quarter: Vanderbilt moves to midfield as the quarter ends. Ole Miss' defense stuck in neutral to start this game in front of a less-than-energized FirstBank Stadium crowd.

2:09 left: Jaxson Dart's fourth down pass is just wide of Casey Kelly as the two rolled to the right. Vandy's defense stands up in their own territory.

3:40 left: Jaxson Dart with consecutive first down throws to Quinshon Judkins and Jonathan Mingo. Ole Miss using tempo.

Ole Miss, Vanderbilt trade field goals to start the game

6:09 left: Joseph Bulovas' short field goal is good. Ole Miss' defense holds on a goal-to-go situation.

Ole Miss 3, Vanderbilt 3.

11:17 left: Jordan Watkins' catch-and-run into the red zone is good enough for a field goal on Ole Miss' first drive of the day. Drive stalled out with a Michael Trigg 2nd-and-1 holding penalty. Jonathan Cruz's 35-yard field goal is good.

Ole Miss 3, Vanderbilt 0.

15:00 left: Ole Miss wins the toss and will receive.
