OLIVET − Olivet College professor Joanne Williams has received grant funding to support the creation of a round-the-clock, student-led news access effort.

Williams was one of 51 educators awarded funding through the online learning platform Course Hero, designed to support faculty and their "dream projects."

Williams, associate professor of media production and communication, is the advisor for the college's student newspaper, The ECHO. The $1,800 grant will help media production and communication students provide 24-hour local news to the Olivet community.

“We live in a news desert in our small city of Olivet,” Williams said in a release. “Yet we know people need to know what is going on in their community, from city council meetings to area entertainment. There is no reliable way to gather that information in one place. These students will offer the community a sort of ‘town crier’ – a video monitor in a public location, offering continuous, updated information.”

Williams added the college would like to provide a "news hub" for Olivet, where students will learn how to run a news operation while exploring the needs of the community.

“The students will learn that the news has to be relevant to the audience, not the producer, and that they must be vigilant in the responsibility of being current, consistent and comprehensive,” Williams said.
