LANSING − An Olivet College baseball player is recovering after he was shot multiple times when he returned to the dugout after a game at an Ohio college to get a personal item he had left behind.

The shooting at Moorehead Baseball Field at Muskingum University in eastern Ohio happened at 7:03 p.m. Friday. Both schools confirmed the incident.

The player, whose name and age were not released, was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital.

The player suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital and is with his parents, Olivet College said in a statement. The rest of the team is safe, spent the night in their hotel and were returning to Olivet College on Saturday, the school said.

Muskingum University is a private school located in New Concord, Ohio, about an hour east of Columbus, with an enrollment of about 1,500 students. It competes in Division III athletics.

"This is a challenging time for all involved and our attention is focused on supporting the student-athletes and staff members," Olivet said in the release. "Please keep your fellow Comets in your thoughts and prayers."

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect was arrested at 7:45 p.m. No other details were released.

Muskingum University issued a shelter-in-place order at 7:23 p.m. It was lifted at 9:15 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff's office said.

Olivet, according to the school's website, won the game against Muskingum, 8-6. Games scheduled for Sunday and Monday against Muskingum and Penn State-Behrend, from Erie, Pennsylvania, were canceled.
