Olivia Colman Is Steely, Pithy Perfection in the Latest Teaser Trailer for The Crown

Ahead of The Crown’s season-three release in November, Netflix has dropped breadcrumb after breadcrumb to amp up anticipation—whether it’s casting news, character portraits, or, lately, “teaser trailers.” The first of these quick video clips was released last month and gave the public a passing glimpse of Olivia Colman in full royal regalia. But as titillating as that was—Colman truly is an acting tour de force—there wasn’t much to it. Well, other than a steadfast stare and some dramatic music.

Today, however, a new teaser included some proper, pithy dialogue.

Queen Elizabeth stands in Buckingham Palace, examining two portraits. In a winking nod to its high-profile casting change, one portrait is of the queen as a young woman (played by Claire Foy), and the other is the queen at middle age (played by Colman). “Everyone is delighted with the new profile, ma’am,” an advisor tells her, “which they feel to be an elegant reflection of Her Majesty’s transition from young woman to…”

“Old bat?” the queen interrupts.

“Settled sovereign,” he replies.

At the end she concludes: “One just has to get on with it.”

The new season of The Crown, arriving nearly two years after season two, will take place in the 1970s. Although exact plot points are unknown, history gives us some hints: For example, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon divorced in 1978, and that decade is also when Prince Charles met Camilla Parker Bowles (then Camilla Shand). That’s one thing about the British monarchy: No matter the time period, they’ve never been short on drama.
