Olivia Rodrigo to Drop New Single, 'Good 4 U,' Shuts Down Sexist Criticism About Her Music

We all know Olivia Rodrigo as music's newest it-girl, Conan Gray's bestie and, of course, one of Taylor Swift's "children." Since she dropped her singles "Drivers License" and "Deja Vu," the 18-year-old singer-songwriter has broken numerous streaming records and become the first artist ever to debut their first two entries in the top five.
Her debut single seemingly blew up overnight and garnered a cult following thanks to apps like TikTok. Since January, all eyes have been on Olivia, and with love also comes criticism.
Olivia's songwriting has received praise and has even been compared to the likes of her favorite artist, Taylor Swift. Like Taylor, Olivia has been criticized for "only writing songs about boys," and she is having none of that. In an interview with British news outlet The Guardian, she shut down sexist criticism surrounding her music, which tends to focus on heartbreak and relationships.
"I’m a teenage girl, I write about stuff that I feel really intensely — and I feel heartbreak and longing really intensely — and I think that’s authentic and natural," she told The Guardian. "I don’t really understand what people want me to write about; do you want me to write a song about income taxes? How am I going to write an emotional song about that?"
Olivia also shared that her debut album SOUR — which drops on May 21 — outlines a range of emotions.
"Something I’m really proud of is that this record talks about emotions that are hard to talk about or aren’t really socially acceptable especially for girls: anger, jealousy, spite, sadness, they’re frowned-upon as bitchy and moaning and complaining or whatever. But I think they’re such valid emotions."
With her debut record being released in about a week's time, Olivia is also set to perform on Saturday Night Live's May 15 show.
She also announced via Instagram that her new single, "Good 4 U" is dropping on Friday, May 14 and that it's one of the songs she'll be performing on SNL the following day.
This will be Olivia's first time performing as SNL's musical guest, and she got here by writing authentic songs about emotions she knows all too well.
