Bringing Up Baby (1938) is considered one of the most significant screwball comedies of all time. This summer, OLLI@OSU will offer a class on classic screwball comedies.

This summer, Bartlesville OLLI@OSU classes will feature everything from classic screwball comedies to extreme heat studies and current economic issues; from Town Hall city notables to local ranchers and a cowboy re-enactor.

Registration is now open online for summer classes at olli@okstate.edu. Classes begin May 22.

Several OLLI day trips in our area give members the opportunity to ride-share visits to the historic Dewey Hotel, Tom Mix Museum, and Prairie Song; Caney, Kansas for the Little House on the Prairie and Safari Zoom with lunch at the Copan Truck Stop; historic Sedan, Kansas for the Emmett Kelly Museum and other sites on the Yellow Brick Road; and Pawhuska for the Osage Museum and the famous cathedral’s stained-glass windows.

In addition to these local trips, OLLI members are invited to go international with a May trip to Costa Rica.

Attending OLLI classes has become a comfortable routine for many area seniors ever since this learning-just-for-fun program was introduced here ten years ago.

"These classes are not for credits or grades,” said Amy Finney, local OLLI@OSU coordinator. “There are no tests, no homework, no papers to write. Local in-person classes and films are held at the Bartlesville Public Library, but the cowboy/ranching class will be at the Bartlesville Area History Museum. We hope everyone signs up for our summer trips.”

Online classes have expanded the scope of OLLI@OSU offerings to a remarkable degree. This summer the choices include three classes that meet only once: Medicare 101; Building Generational Wealth: Financial Knowledge for Future Generations; and the Science of Living Long and Living Well.

A class on Hitler’s A-Team will meet every day for one week, June 5-9, in a survey of the Americans and American corporations that aided Hitler and the Nazis during their 1930s rise to power.

One four-week class is about Grandparents: Raising, Contributing and Influencing the Future Generations of Grandchildren. The course on Contemporary Economic Policy Issues will address a set of prominent policy issues with economics at the core.

Another is about the expected El Nino weather event when we will face extreme drought and heat with temperatures 15 degrees or more above normal. How does one stay cool (or even stay alive) in rising temperatures and widespread power outage? How will your community deal with these events? Learn about heat domes, derechos, urban heat islands, heat stroke and heat index. This course will give you some survival tools and the ability to research scientific/academic literature about extreme heat.

Local OLLI members often drive to Tulsa for the classes offered there. This summer has a Wednesdays class on Apple devices—held at the Apple store in Woodland Hills Mall, and three tours held on Fridays in June: the Bob Dylan Center, the Woodie Guthrie Center, and a behind-the-scenes tour of Channel 6 TV.

A la carte memberships at $40 are valid through June 30 with most classes for $25; some less, some free; scholarships are available; no charge for classes with premium memberships. Register online at olli@okstate.edu or please call the Stillwater OLLI office at 405-744-5868 for more information.
