Olympic Heights football opens offseason coaching carousel

Palm Beach County has its first high school football coaching change of the offseason.

Olympic Heights head coach Brandon Knight announced Monday he was stepping down after two seasons as Lions head coach.

In a post to Twitter, Knight said the school informed him Monday they would be moving in a "different direction" with the football program.

What to know

Knight posted a 5-15 record in two seasons with Olympic Heights.

The Lions were 4-6 in his debut 2021 season, but struggled this fall, losing nine straight games after a season-opening win over Suncoast.

Knight served as Olympic Heights defensive coordinator for two seasons under former head coach Kevin Wald, who resigned one day prior to the start of spring football in 2021.

Knight coached the 2021 spring game under an interim tag before administration promoted him to full-time status.

By the numbers

Olympic Heights football last posted a winning record in 2017, finishing 5-4 under head coach Baz Alfred, who now leads Jupiter Christian.

The Lions also posted a winning season in 2016, finishing 7-3 under head coach Chris Kokell, who now leads the Fort Pierce Westwood football program.

Coaching carousel begins

Knight is unlikely to be the offseason's only coaching change in Palm Beach County.

16 local high school football programs started this fall with new head coaches in a continuation of the local trend of frequent coaching turnover.

A total of 18 new coaches were introduced last offseason with Royal Palm Beach and Suncoast briefly hiring coaches that did not stay on until the fall.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
