This Saturday, the Omaha-based British market and gift shop Chippy's will open at 2310 SE Delaware Ave. in Ankeny, bringing Des Moines-area customers access to British foods, snacks and novelties imported from the United Kingdom.

"In Omaha we had a lot of customers coming from Des Moines, Altoona and Ames, and so we just knew this was a convenience we could offer them," said Laura McLaughlin, director of operations at Chippy's Group. "There's a magic that happens when you walk into the shop."

Chippy's sells everything from candies, pies and pastries to ingredients for a traditional English breakfast, including 40 flavors of jams and Cumberland sausage. The Ankeny location will feature some items not yet sold at other Chippy's stores, including Golden Wonder crisps, new English teas and some Harry Potter-themed goods, McLaughlin said.

Every Chippy's location also features a shelf dedicated to British currency and memorabilia donated by customers to create a small British museum for display.

"Every day is like Christmas in the shop," McLaughlin said. "That's the thing we're most excited about, to share all our favorite products and the store's magic with as many people as we can. We're just excited. We're just ready."

Chippy's has plans to open stores in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota, next year; in Kansas City, Missouri, and Denver in 2024; and in Branson, Missouri, by 2025.

The Ankeny Chippy's will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
