🌱Omicron Surge Pushes Hospitals To Limit + Christmas Eve Service

·4 min read

Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Alexis Goring, your host of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

Not as cool. High: 53 Low: 41.

Here are the top three stories today in Laurel:

  1. Maryland hospitals are being pushed beyond their limits by the Omicron surge and they are sounding the alarm. The influx of $100M announced by Governor Hogan Thursday may not be enough to help. Bob Atlas, president of the Maryland Hospital Association, says half of that money was already due to make up for earlier shortfalls and the rest will be split among hospitals and nursing homes. (WJLA)

  2. Charles Town Races will be dark until January. So, trainer Jeff Runco is keeping some of his stars busy. He will send a trio of West Virginia-bred runners to Laurel Park stakes Dec. 26. Those include three-time WVBC Onion Juice winner Penguin Power, entered in the $100,000 Dave’s Friend Stakes for older sprinters, and a pair of juveniles. Two-time stakes winner Run to Daylight and West Virginia-based stablemate Amidships are entered for a chance at redemption in the $100,000 Heft. The Heft and Dave’s Friend are among six $100,000 stakes on the nine-race Christmastide Day program. (theracingbiz.com)

  3. The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections has suspended all nonlegal visits as a precautionary measure due to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the area. This is an effort to prioritize the safety of its inmates, employees and community. However, it is making arrangements for noncontact legal visits to be done remotely. COVID-19 vaccines are being made available for all inmates who want them. (WTOP)
