Onaway boys start fast, capture Ski Valley win at Forest Area
FIFE LAKE – Even when they’re not playing the toughest of opponents, the Onaway Cardinals are still taking everyone seriously.
Facing Ski Valley last-place Forest Area on the road, the Cardinals took care of business once more in a 72-28 boys basketball victory on Thursday.
“There’s nothing better than a game like this where everybody can get involved,” said Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak, whose squad won a seventh straight game. “We held them to under single digits in every quarter, and three points in the third quarter. It’s kind of hard to keep your guys from getting lazy in games like this, but they stayed disciplined, and defensively they just keep doing what they do.
“For a game like this, they stayed on top of it and made sure we took care of business.”
The Cardinals (12-2, 10-1 Ski Valley) started fast on Thursday, opening up a 25-8 lead after one quarter of play. The Cardinals held a 41-16 advantage heading into the break.
On the night, 10 Onaway players scored, led by junior guard Austin Veal’s game-high 27 points. Veal connected on four made 3-pointers, including three in the first half.
Jadin Mix finished with 11 points for the Cardinals, who received nine from Jackson Chaskey, eight from Mason Beebe, five from Brendon Brewbaker, and four from Cole Selke.
“I was really happy to see some of the guys come off the bench and do a nice job,” Szymoniak said. “It was good to go into Forest Area after a long road trip and take care of business.”
Onaway continues Ski Valley action when it hosts Central Lake on Tuesday, Feb. 7. It’ll be the only game of the week for the Cardinals, who will take on Rogers City, Gaylord St. Mary and Inland Lakes in a tough three-game stretch the following week.
