Once-Trapped Cargo Ship Ever Given Leaves Suez Canal

The 1,312-foot-long container ship that blocked the Suez Canal after it ran aground in March finally departed the waterway on Wednesday, July 7, after a financial compensation agreement was reached between Egypt and the ship’s owners.

A live map from Marine Traffic shows the ship’s northward journey toward the Mediterranean. The ship departed the Suez Wednesday morning after its Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd, reached a settlement agreement with the Suez Canal Authority, the company said in a statement.

The Ever Given had blocked both directions of the highly traveled Suez Canal for six days in March. It was then held in the canal’s Great Bitter Lake while the canal and the vessel’s owners negotiated the settlement, according to reports. Credit: Marine Traffic via Storyful
