One of Austin’s most noted chefs will open a North Texas restaurant. Call it — Crazy

An Austin restaurant once named home of the “second greatest burger in Texas” is coming to Mineral Wells.

But not where expected.

Second Bar + Kitchen, a contemporary grill and bar from James Beard Award-winning chef David Bull, will open this summer in the restored Crazy Water Hotel, owners announced Wednesday.

The Mineral Wells location for Second Bar + Kitchen’s second location is not a surprise. The Palo Pinto County city expects regional tourism to grow with the reopening of the historic Baker Hotel.

But the restaurant location changed. It was originally announced two years ago as opening in the Baker.

Both hotels have been under an Austin-based management group that also handles the historic Hotel Settles in Big Spring along with an Austin hotel.

Second Bar + Kitchen has a transient history. The restaurant made headlines when it opened on Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, and its Congress Burger ranked the No. 2 hamburger in Texas in 2016 by Texas Monthly.

That location and another location at The Domain shopping center in north Austin have closed.

Currently, the only Second Bar + Kitchen is at the East Austin Hotel, 1108 E. Sixth St. (There is also a location at the Austin airport.)‘

The Crazy Water, 401 N. Oak Ave., in Mineral Wells, will become a new home for Second Bar + Kitchen’s black-truffle pommes frites, baked brie, duck confit and brunch dishes such as strawberry goat-cheese scones.

The brisket-blend Congress Burger is a Swiss cheeseburger described by Texas Monthly as “monumentally juicy.”
