Will one of Central Jersey's worst traffic bottlenecks finally be fixed?

One of the busiest intersections and congested traffic bottlenecks in Central Jersey is being targeted for improvements.

The state Department of Transportation has unveiled plans to upgrade the intersection of Route 22 and Route 202-206 in Bridgewater, though construction may not begin until the summer of 2028.

No cost estimate has been given for the project still in the concept development stage.

Highlights of the project include:

  • Adding a lane to Route 22 in both directions

  • Replacement of the southbound Route 202-206 bridge over Route 22

  • Widening the Route 202-206 bridge over Route 22

  • Replacement of the Route 22 bridge over Mountain Avenue

The changes were proposed after an extensive study of traffic volume and crashes in the interchange.

Route 22, according to the DOT, scores a 10 on the safety scale with 10 being the worst. A total of 299 crashes were reported in 2014-16.

Safety on Route 202-206 is better, with a score of four.

Congestion on Route 202-206 was in the top 2% of statewide data.

The project is designed to improve travel time through the intersection on both highways by two minutes, according to the DOT.

The DOT has an online presentation of the project, and questions, comments and suggestions will be accepted through Feb. 26.
