Charging e-scooter blows up, starts apartment fire in DC, building rep says; person critically hurt

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A representative of an apartment building that caught fire Tuesday said an electrical scooter blew up while it was charging, leaving one person with critical injuries.

DC Fire and EMS said In a post on the platform X around 11:50 a.m. that crews were in the 1300 block of Peabody St. NW. where flames were showing from the basement of a three-story apartment building.

Firefighters rescued one person who was hurt critically from inside of the building. Medics took the person to the hospital.

The building’s representative said the person was a guest of a tenant.

Firefighters rescued other people from the upper floors via portable ladders. They also rescued two dogs and a cat.

In an update just after 12:20 p.m., fire officials said that the fire had been knocked down and that crews were searching for an extension.

DC Fire and EMS said that it anticipated a “large number” of displacements from the fire.

Investigators said late Tuesday afternoon that they still were working to determine the official cause of the fire.
