One in critical condition after train crashes with semi-trailer near Amherst

A train was derailed Monday morning after it crashed into a semi-trailer near Amherst.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a semi-trailer was trying to cross the track when it was struck by a train around 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 and County Road 125.

The driver of the semi was taken to UMC in Lubbock and is in critical condition.

The derailed train cars did lose some fertilizer and carbon dioxide; however, DPS said that the fertilizer was in pellet form and poses no risk to the public's safety.

The westbound lane on U.S. 84 is currently being diverted through Sudan while crews work on cleaning up the debris, as of 2:30 p.m.
