One dead in downtown Akron apartment fire Tuesday night

Akron firefighters are trying to douse a blaze at a vacant warehouse just south of downtown Thursday afternoon.

A woman was killed and three other adults were taken to the hospital after a fire Tuesday night at an apartment building at 702 Fleming Drive, about a block north of West Thornton Street in downtown Akron.

Akron Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene a couple of minutes before 6 p.m. Tuesday and had the fire under control at 6:10 p.m.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman who died as Arika Rogers, 20, who was found unresponsive in her apartment and pronounced dead at the scene. Her cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, and her manner of death has not yet been determined.

Fire Lt. Tim Morrison said dispatchers received multiple calls from neighbors in the apartment building and from a building across the street. Arriving firefighters found the apartment was in flames two or three floors above ground level, he said.

No further details were available about the extent of injuries of the three other people, who lived in adjacent apartments. The origin of the fire and estimate of damage are not yet known, Morrison said. The incident remains under investigation.

In addition to the fatality and the injuries, five adults and two children were displaced. The Red Cross was notified to assist victims, and Akron police and Victims Assistance Program were on scene to provide aid for residents. No other injuries were reported.
