A person died after their car veered off Highway 111, crashed and caught fire, Palm Springs police said.

It was reported after 3 a.m. Friday east of Highway 111 and south of Gateway Drive.

The fire was extinguished and the route was closed before reopening after 9 a.m. The driver was the only person in the car.

Police said the unidentified driver appeared to be male, and a preliminary investigation found the man was traveling north on Highway 111, veered off the road for unknown reasons and crashed into the wall at a high rate of speed.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved or if the crash was caused by a medical emergency.
