One dead after fire senior living facility in Ridgewood, authorities say

RIDGEWOOD — A Saturday evening fire at Ridgecrest Apartments, a senior living facility on Ridge Road, left one resident dead.

"The loss of life is a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Mayor Susan Knudsen.

The victim's “positive identification is still pending,” said police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke.

“A resident called 911 at about 7:30 p.m. after seeing smoke coming from a neighboring apartment,” said Luthcke.

A "few" other residents of the facility were taken to the hospital for evaluation, but those medical concerns were not related to smoke or the fire itself, Luthcke said.

The cause of the fire, which was extinguished quickly after the Ridgewood Fire Department arrived, is still under investigation, authorities said.

All Ridgecrest residents have returned to their homes, according to Knudsen.

Saturday's fire was the third fatal blaze in Bergen County in a week.

A man and a woman were killed in a fire on Apgar Place in South Hackensack early Friday. A third person was injured.

On June 4, a 17-year-old girl died in a fire at her home on Bonnie Way in Allendale.
