One dead in Knoxville school shooting

A high school student in Knoxville, Tennessee opened fire on his campus on Monday, wounding an officer, before being shot and killed by police.

The shooting erupted at about 3:15 p.m. at Austin-East Magnet High School on the east side of the city.

It's the latest in a string of shootings across the U.S. since mid-March.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch told reporters Monday the wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

"One officer returned fire. He was pronounced& the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and has since been identified as a student at Austin East."

Austin-East was locked down following the gunfire and parents who rushed to the scene were directed to pick up their children at a rear entrance.

The Austin-East community has been shaken by gun violence this year.

Four other students at the school have been killed in shootings across the city in recent months, according to media reports.

Monday's incident joins a growing list of mass shootings which have shaken communities in Texas, Georgia, Colorado and California in the past month alone.
