Coroner seeks help in finding next of kin for man who died in Wednesday's car accident

PEORIA – An 85-year-old man was identified as the person who died in a single vehicle accident Wednesday morning in North Peoria.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Richard J. Huizinga, who lived on North Acorn Court, suffered a "catastrophic cardiac event, and was most likely dead" before his car struck a house.

Harwood is asking for help in finding Huizinga's family. Anyone with information is asked to call his office at (309) 669-2000.

According to Peoria police, the crash occurred just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of North University Street and North Miramar Drive, which is just north of the Tanglewood Shopping Center.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle had cross over four lanes of University Street and crashed through a fence of a house in the 7000 block of Teakwood Court.

Huizinga was pronounced dead at the scene.

The home sustained damage to the deck, which was temporarily reinforced by the Peoria Fire Department, and no one inside the home was injured.
