One dead, more than a dozen displaced by Paterson four-alarm fire

Officials confirmed Saturday that one person died in an overnight fire on Lafayette Street in Paterson.

Deputy Chief William Henderson said that one person was confirmed dead in the four-alarm blaze that started shortly after 11 p.m. Friday.

The fire started in a two-story home at 103 Lafayette Street and spread to buildings on both sides, he said.

The person who died was found in that building and Henderson said that there were no other injuries. He estimated 13 people have been displaced.

Most of the fire was under control by 3 a.m. but the department is still monitoring the area because of the investigation, Henderson said.

It was the second four-alarm blaze on Lafayette in less than two months. In late October, another four-alarm blaze just a block down the street at 140 Lafayette brought down part of a home and damaged two others. No one was injured but at least 20 residents were displaced by that blaze.
