Muncie woman dead after near-downtown apartment fire

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie woman died Thursday morning after being carried from her near-downtown apartment where a fire had broken out.

Carolyn Fisher, 76, was pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, according to Delaware County Coroner-elect Gavin Greene.

The blaze was reported to emergency dispatchers at 8:19 a.m. in the 800 block of South Madison Street, in the Millennium Place complex.

According to scanner traffic, emergency responders brought out the victim from her apartment, then described her as having a faint pulse.

Fisher was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Scott Hahn of the Muncie Fire Department said the blaze broke out in a bedroom and was perhaps the result of careless smoking. Its cause remains under investigation.

The fire was quickly extinguished, he said.

Hahn said the fire was reported by a friend of the victim who saw smoke when she arrived at the apartment for a visit.

An autopsy will likely be conducted Friday at the hospital, Greene said.
