One dead, one escapes after fire destroys home near Long Beach, chief says

One person died in a fire that swept through a mobile home early Tuesday morning just outside the Long Beach city limits, Harrison County Fire Chief Pay Sullivan said Tuesday.

Firefighters from Harrison County and Pass Christian responded after the fire that broke out before dawn Tuesday in a home on Cronier Avenue near Pineville Road.

Sullivan said officials received a 911 call about the fie around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday.

One person escaped the fire, Sullivan said, and firefighters found the second person dead in a back room in the trailer a short time later.

The identity of the man who died is pending. Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said dental records will likely have to be used to get a positive identification on the victim.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Sullivan and the state Fire Marshal’s office are investigating.

“We think it is accidental,” Sullivan said. adding that so far investigators are looking at whether the fire started as a result of an electrical problem or from a space heater inside the home.
