1 man killed, his friend arrested after gun ‘went off’ in Bountiful home

BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC4) — A man was booked into jail for suspected manslaughter Friday after investigators say a gun “went off” in a Bountiful home, leaving a 20-year-old man dead.

The Bountiful Police Department said the deadly incident happened around 11:20 a.m. at a home on the 600 block of East Millcreek Way. Responding officers found Jacob Hess, of North Salt Lake, suffering from a single gunshot wound.

While officers and first-responders tried to help Hess, he died at the scene.

Dylan Goodin, 21, of Bountiful, cooperated with police. He was treated for an injury to his hand before being released.

According to investigators, Goodin, Hess and another man in his 20s were handling a gun when it “went off,” with the bullet striking Hess. Later, officers searched the home, finding drugs.

Lt. Andrew Smith told reporters that Hess, Goodin and the other man were high school friends.

Goodin was booked into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of manslaughter, illegal gun possession and drug possession.

The shooting remains under investigation.
