One dead, two hurt in Ind. 332 crash in western Delaware County

MUNCIE, Ind. — The extended holiday weekend began with tragedy in Delaware County as a woman was killed in a crash late Wednesday afternoon on Ind. 332.

The collision, in the state highway's eastbound lanes, was reported to emergency dispatchers at 4:46 p.m.

Jeff Stanley, chief deputy for the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, said a 2000 Toyota Avalon was traveling southbound on Delaware County Road 700-W, and failed to yield the right of way to a 2014 Ford Focus traveling eastbound on Ind. 332.

A passenger in the Toyota — later identified as 86-year-old Joann Morris — was fatally injured in the crash. Delaware County Coroner Rick Howell said she was pronounced dead after being transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

That vehicle's driver and the driver of the Ford were also taken by ambulance to the Muncie hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's department's crash reconstruction team is investigating the collision.

Also responding to the scene were Yorktown and Gaston firefighters, Delaware County EMS personnel, and staff with the Delaware County coroner's office and the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency.

The death of Delaware County's second traffic fatality of the week. On Tuesday morning, 58-year-old James Brown of Muncie was killed in a head-on collision on Ind. 3 near Delaware County Road 700-N.
