One dead, two injured, after head-on crash in Bethany

A North Carolina man died, and two Naugatuck women were injured, in a weekend head-on crash in Bethany, state police said.

One of the women’s injuries were serious, they said.

The crash happened on Route 63, or Amity Road, shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday. A southbound 2012 Jeep Liberty Jet driven by Elizabeth Capodiferro, 57, and a northbound 2012 Nissan Murano driven by Paul Anthony Vitelli of Greensboro, NC, collided near Valley Road, state police said.

All three were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, Vitelli with life-threatening injuries, police said. He later died.

Capodiferro was being treated for serious injuries, and her passenger, Sofia Capodiferro, 19, was being treated for what troopers believed were minor injuries, state police said.

Troopers said they didn’t know why the two vehicles collided.

State police continue to investigate. Anyone who saw the crash or knows anything about it is asked to call Trooper Marissa Jankowski at the Troop I barracks, at 203-393-4200.
